The Commerce Department on Tuesday opened the application process for semiconductor manufacturing subsidies under the $53 billion CHIPS and Science Act passed last year, and large expansion projects in the North Texas city of Sherman stand to gain under the initiative. Sherman Mayor David Plyler said major projects underway in the city by Dallas-based Texas Instruments (Nasdaq: TI) and GlobiTech, a subsidiary of Taiwanese tech manufacturing company GlobalWafers Co., will likely move forward regardless of funding through the CHIPS Act — but Globitech in particular is counting on financial incentives from the act.
